Report
on three days’ workshop on textiles dyeing and printing

The
objectives of the workshop were:

The learn about the application of
dyeing and printing methods and enhance the observation skills.
·
To get familiar with the textile
design process and to make design ideas using different techniques in dyeing
and printing.
·
To understand the importance of
market trends on printing and dyeing.
·
To motivate students to start up
their own establishment.
Report:
A three days’ workshop on
textile dyeing and printing techniques was held in the campus of St. josephs
college for women (A), in the department of home science on 1/2/2021 to
3/2/2021. The resource person of the workshop was Mrs. Jyothi from Dayalbagh Educational
Institute, who is an expert in textile dyeing and printing.
On the first day of workshop,
students learnt about the classification of synthetic dyes through a lecture
given by Mrs.Jyothi, followed by the different knotting techniques of tie and dye.
In the second session students were taught about the preparation of dye bath, -
and post-methods of dyeing and material such as liquor ratio, preparation of
dye pastes and dye bath.
Students also experienced
application of dyes on fabric and also prepared a sample of their own using
different techniques which the resource person taught.
On the second day of the
workshop students learnt about block printing taught by resource person along
with her co instructors Mrs. Lakshmi and Mrs.Bindu. They have given demonstration
on how to mix binder with pigments and imprint on the fabric by using blocks.
The resource persons also have given demonstration on how to spread backing on
the padding table, measures to be taken while printing and after printing. They
have also given instructions like how to clean blocks and washing instructions
of printed fabrics. At the end of the session students designed their own
sarees and dresses using block printing and tye and dye techniques.
On the third day of workshop Mrs.
Jyothi and her co instructors introduced the method of screen printing to
students. At the end of the session students screen printed on their own
articles and exhibited their skill of designing.
At the end of the workshop, a
formal vote of thanks was proposed and Mrs.Jyothi, Mrs. Lakshmi and Mrs. Bindu were
offered baskets of fruits as a gesture of appreciation for their wonderful teaching
skills and way of demonstration. The workshop not only gave firsthand
experience in dyeing and printing but also inspired students to step towards a startup
and become entrepreneurs. All the students were very much involved and
enthusiastic throughout the workshop and so it is hoped that they might get inspired.
