                               The students of III BSc Home Science of St. Joseph’s College for Women (A) had a guest lecture about “Food Safety and Quality Management” by guest lecturer Mr. Sailesh Sangu, Food Executive officer from Gitam University.

                            In this session, we learned about Food safety and its principles; Hazards and its types; Factors influencing food quality and importance of food quality; Packaging, types of packaging and its objectives; Food labeling and importance. Sir explained us about Food safety and its importance briefly. Sir also explained us about cooking temperatures Sir explained us about Consideration for packing and its importance. Scope in food technology career guidance,  oppurtunities, brief introduction about food quality and safety.

CONCLUSION

          Students had a great interactive session and gained knowledge about the background processes happening in the food industries.

On 2nd September 2023 as a part of national nutrition week, a guest lecture was conducted by Department of Home Science. The guest was Mrs. Surya Deepthi Mam, senior consultant nutritionist at Starlite Nutrition, Vishakhapatnam.

The session was about the various methods of nutritional assessments and their application in assessing the patient.

The Nutritional assessment tools are   

  1. Disease based
  2. Age based
  3. The various methods are
  4. Subjective Global Assessment
  5. Biochemical Assessment
  6. 3.Anthropometric Testing and BMI
  7. Biochemical Impedance Analysis
  8. Handgrip Functional Test
  9. Three day food dairy

 

The factors  that are to be considered while nutritional assessment are

  2. Weight loss
  3. Morbidity
  1. 4.Psychological stress
  1. Neuropsychological stress
  2. BMI  

 

Mam has also taught us to calculate the hip/waist ratio and the calorie requirement of a post cardiac surgery person.

                         On 1st August 2023, day one of World Breastfeeding Awareness week, a guest lecture was conducted for the students of  Home science by Dr.Nalini Sadaram, a certified lactation consultant, a certified child birth educator from CAPPA, India.

·       The session included the benefits of breastfeeding, which helps the baby to be fed on right composition, and helps in developing an higher IQ and more.

·       The breast milk as said is known as LIQUID GOLD, increases the bond between the mother and the baby as the breast secretes oils that smells same like the amniotic fluid and provides the baby a sense of belongingness.

·       The session has also given the knowledge on the maintenance of breasts during pre-natal and neo-natal stages.

·       The importance of hormones and their applicability during the breastfeeding period was also explained.

·       Mam also discussed the available career options in the field off lactation and nutrition.

                         The session was very interactive and interesting. The points discussed were very informative. Students gained knowledge and awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding.

                         We the students of Home Science sincerely thank our Head of the Department Dr.Y.Lakshmi Prabha ma’am and all the faculty members for his opportunity.

Introduction : In 1983, 4 members from II AM Ahmedabad wanted to get into non-corporate company and professionalise NGO in the country. Their main aim is to empower the women. They started as “DHAN” means Development in humane in action. Located in south areas. DHAN headquarters is situated in Madurai in the year of 1997. The another one is PRADHAN it is a national level professional NGO. In the year of 1990 it was established in north areas.

 

THE VISION OF DHAN AND PRADHAN:

 Mission, strategies, objectives, programmes, values these are the main vision of their organization . In their view these visions are the main aspects to develope their organization.

 AIM OF DHAN AND PRADHAN:

 In the year of 1997 the DHAN’s major aim is to poverty elevation/poverty eradication.

 MISSION OF DHAN AND PRADHAN;

Their mission is to poverty free, value based, errectible, ecological balance, justice of the country.

FOUNDER OF PRADHAN;

JOHN AMBLER is the founder of PRADHAN.

*His main theme is building institutions for future generations.

*Their four pillars are collaboration, excellence, innovation, grass root action to enable the values.

ACTIVITIES:

*There are 12 clusters in vizag in 15 slums.

*All over the India they are working in 16 states, more than 150 regions.

*Their aim is to women empowerment collaboration and mutuality.

CONCLUSION:

Students had gained knowledge by listening to guest lecture and had an interactive session with the volunteer of Dhan and inspired a lot to enculculate the values and activities.

INTRODUCTION

   We the students of III year Home Science visited the organization with the assistanceof Sr.Dipali. In the year of establishment Sri K. Durga Prasad, IPS, then commissioner of police to take care of the children between the age group 6-14 years. The children who are found without home or orphans or children whose parent/guardian is unfit to take care of the child or abandoned children comes under the category of children in need of protection. The police has realized their role to be played in taking remedial measures to purge these children of their social crimes. These children commit crimes under the pressure of Mafia Gangs. So the public and police joined hands in organizing a project where helpless kids can be educated and rehabilitated. Realizing their need for food, clothes, a shelter, civilization, self reliance and understanding of the dignity of life, the Public and Police have started an Association and named it PUBLIC AND POLICE ASSOCIATION for street children.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

1. To bring these children back into social main stream.

2. To release them from the grip of the mafia gangs.

3. To psychologically free them from criminal tendencies.

4. To keep them away from drug abuse and sex abuse.

5. To give them schooling according to their aptitude.

6. To give them vocational training thus paving the way for self reliance.

7. To convert them from being social liabilities to become social assets and human resource.

8. To reunite them with their families.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Ø  HSBC donated Rs. 35 lakhs for the construction of new West block in 2006 with the initiation of Sri VSK Kaumudi

Ø  The ground floor of the South block was constructed in 2007 with the funds donated by local philanthropists.

Ø  The first floor of the South block was taken up by Visakha refinery of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation in the year 2008

Thus, PAPA Home have sufficient infrastructure to accommodate 100 children.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

    The institute of “Public and Police Association for Street Children” (PAPA HOME) is selected for the ‘National Award’ twice for child welfare, for its services rendered in the field of ‘Welfare of children’ in the years 2009 and 2015. The award was presented by Hon’ble Presidents of India at that respective years.

CONCLUSION

    The students of 3rd BSc Home Science of St. Joseph’s College for Women (A) visited the PAPA Home and gained knowledge about how the organization is managed and maintained. The students came to know about how the organization is working for the welfare of the children, their aims and objectives.

        Students of III Home Science went to visit Loyala old age home a charitable organization  with the assistance of Sr.Dipali on 14-07-2023.Students interacted with various mentally and physically challenged people and collected general information.  This organization looks after both male and female orphans and destitutes. Maximum number of people are from the road sides , KGH hospital and from the railway station too.

ACTIVITIES:

Voluntary organization provides medical checkup.

Frequent  grooming  of old age home people.

Students from different institutes visit  this organization to interact with people and render their service.

The organization distributes generously blankets , food to the people lying down on the foot path helplessly.

DONATIONS:

Organization donations from charitable people they take money as donations for food servings.

The organization gets funds from their own  ITI company.

ACHIVEMENTS OF ORGANIZATION:

The organization is recognized with charitable acts thus, received limca award.

EMERGENCY ISSUES:

The inmates will be taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in case of any emergency  if not doctor will be called to attend to their needs.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Students interacted with the destitute and with the management and came to know the service rendered  there.

They have clearly understood the goals and objectives followed by the organization.

It was a live experience for each student  to inculcate the respect towards humanity irrespective of their status.

Students  learnt about how well the organization is maintained.

Students observed how the management is taking care of the people according to their needs.

CONCLUSION:

Students had gained knowledge by visiting the old age home. They had a clear understanding   about how well the management is taking initiatives and activities in the voluntary organization.
