Department of Home science celebrated National nutrition week from 1stto 7th September. As a part of the celebrations numerous activities were conducted by the department for both faculty and students. Competitions like poster making and cross word puzzle were conducted for students of the department. Renound hospital medicover collaborated with the department and provided free medical and  diet counselling along with free assessment of vital parameters like B.p, height  Weight and blood hemoglobin level. Highlight of the whole celebrations was food sale put up by final year students , the food stuff was prepared by the students in the Nutrition lab. Students were involved from buying raw stuff to designing recepies, pricing and serving. It was a very success sale all itemsI.eMomos, poori – curry, pizza, fruit juices  were sold out within an hour  with an excellent feedback from all thestaff and faculty of the college. For teachers a fun game was arranged named “ Guess The Ingredients”, where they tasted a secret dish and were asked to write maximum number of ingredients within a time limit. A huge participation was seen. Nutrition week celebration was a huge success for the department and students.

On the occasion of National Handloom Day Department of Home Science has organised a Handloom display on the theme Weaves and Elements of Design on different types of Indian Handlooms. The display was inauguratedby Sr. Francisca, Superior of St. Joseph’s Convent and Dr.Sr. Shyji, Principal, St. Joseph’s College for Women (A).  Various types of weaves which are prominent for different sates depicting various elements such as line, shape, colour, value, texture on handloom sarees.As part of handloom day celebrations, a ramp walk competition titled Handloom Queen/King was conducted for faculty, where faculty were asked to drape a handloom in any Indian style and need to explain about the handloom worn by them. The faculty of SJC (25 members)took an active participation in the competition. The guest for competition held for faculty was Mrs. Sonica Kankatala, Director, Digital Marketing, Kankatala also visited and appraised the efforts put in by students in putting up the handloom display. Also, a ramp walk competition was held for students titled“Handloom Princess” where students from different departments took an active participation in competing with others. The guest of this competition was Mrs. Rachana Grandhi, Crafts Trainer, Entrepreneur, Alumni of Home Science department.




STUDY TOUR AND CONFERENCE REPORT-14-22,DEC-2022IN KERALA

 

STUDY TOUR REPORT

A study tour was organized by Department of Home Science to Ernakulam. As part of it students participated in 34th Biennial conference of Home Science Association of India (HSAI) which was held at St. Theresa’s College, Ernakulum , Kerala. From the department 55 girls were taken escorted by 5 faculty members. Trip was 6 days long which was attending conference along with sightseeing. First 3 days students attended national conference and got exposed to latest research and development in the field. We also had an opportunity to see and meet stalwarts from the field. As part of sightseeing four places were covered Ernakulum, Kanthaloor, Munar and Alleppey. Students enjoyed a lot during boat rides. . Learnt a lot about local spices and fruits in Botanical and flower gardens followed by visit top lemon grass hill view point , a scenic hill top  and watch tower.  Kanthaloor water fall was visited which had a very adventures trek.   In Kanthaloor (highest peak of south) students and faculty experienced tent stay with bonfire. Next destination was Munar reached by bus with beautiful view of tea estates. Places visited in Munar were Lakkum water falls, Mattupatti Dam and boat ride in botanical garden. After a night’s halt group proceeded towards Alleppey saw beautiful backwaters followed by boat ride in beautiful Alleppey. On the same evening the group boarded train for Visakhapatnam from Ernakulum. The trip was concluded on a happy and fulfilling note as Students and Faculties returned with a very happy and enriching experience.

          Department of Home Science has conducted a guest lecture on behavioural problems among children as part of Child Development practicals on 11 Nov, 2022.DMr. Aarthi Chakra, Head, Department of Home Science, KVR Governemnt College for Women, Kurnool. The session was started by T. Gayatri of II B.Sc H.Sc by introducing the guest speaker and continued by the lecture of guest speaker. The lecture has given a good insight on types of behavioral problems, ways of identifying and dealing with children of various behavioral problems. Students felt, the session was very fascinating and enthusiastic and took active interaction during the guest lecture. Session was concluded by formal vote thanks given by Mary Jeshitha of II B.Sc H.Sc.

Mrs. Sushma Kallam, Founder Rural Health Link-in, A technology solution for medical delivery to rural India is invited as guest speaker. The session was started by P. Dakshyani of III B.Sc H.sc by introducing the guest speaker and continued by the lecture of guest speaker. The lecture has given a good insight on Women’s health is very crucial area and monitoring women’s health is a practical tip in maintenance of women’s health. World of Women is a app which helps to track the health of women of different age group from puberty to old age and it also facilitates interaction with experts for counseling/advice.
