World Habitat Day is marked on first Monday of October each year, and is recognized by the United Nations to reflect on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. Guest lecture was arranged on status of housing and need for planning quality housing.

GUEST LECTURE ON WORLD HABITAT DAY – “ACCELERATING THE URBAN ACTION FOR CARBON FREE”

          Department of Home Science has conducted a guest lecture on the occasion of WORLD HABITAT DAY on the theme Accelerating the Urban Action for Carbon Free. Mrs. Allu Revathi Devi, Associate Professor, Department of Architecture, Andhra University is invited as guest speaker. The session was started by M.Sushma of III B.Sc H.sc by introducing the guest speaker and continued by the lecture of guest speaker.The lecture has given a good insight on goals of sustainable development and importance of observing world habitat day on every first Monday of October. Also said that the way to protect environment is possible with 5R’s principle i.e., REDUCE, RESUE, RECYCLE, RECOVER, REFUSE. Students felt, the session was very fascinating and enthusiastic and took active interaction during the guest lecture. Session was concluded by formal vote thanks given by NaliniKumari of III B.ScH.Sc.

VEGAN DAY CELEBRATION-1/11/21

 

WORLD VEGAN DAY 🌿

Objective:

  • To develop recipes without the incorporation of milk
  • Awareness about lactose intolerance and it’s substitute

                 Veganism is defined as a way of living that attempts to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty, whether for food, clothing or any other purpose.For these reasons, the vegan diet is devoid of all animal products, including meat, eggs and dairy. Vegans get all the nutrients that they need to be healthy, such as plant protein, fiber, and minerals Vegan diets tend to be rich in nutrients and low in saturated fats. Research suggests that the diet can improve heart health, protect against cancer, and lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. On behalf of Worlds vegan day gnanapuram st  joseph post graduation home science students celebrated it very delightfully in their college. They prepared various recipes of vegan and displayed them. All those recipes are the replacement of animals sources like milk and milk products. This are very much helpful to the people who are facing lactose intolerance. Recipes include vegan milks like coconut milk, almond milk, soya milk, ground nut milk which are purely replacing animal milk and recipes also include vegan tea and coffee made of almond milk and vegan curd made of coconut milk, vegan cowpea masala tikkis, vegan kulfi, vegan payasam made of coconut milk, vegan cake made of almond milk, vegan green smoothie made of kiwi, banana, green apple and spinach, vegan soy chapathis. This recipes are done by PG home science students of st joseph college named Janaki, Jyothi, ludhiya, mehar, mounika, swetha, yamini, harshini, devamani by the guidence of respected Gayathri mam and Sony mam.

More than 100 of students actively participated the vegan day celebrations. Head of the department of Home Science Dr Y. Lakshmi Prabha gave suggestions, Dr Jayalakshmi head of department of languages appreciated the effort and many more faculties acknowledged the hard work of the students and gave appreciation.

WORKSHOP ON FOOD EXCHANGES IN MEAL PLANNING-3 ON NUTRITIONAL WEEK-7th September 2021

WORKSHOP – FOOD EXCHANGES IN MEAL PLANNING

Date: 7th September 2021

 

The objectives of the workshop were: -

·       To learn about food exchanges in meal planning.

·       To learn to make menu plans using food exchanges.

Number of participants:  48

 

3rd year students of home science.

Topic:  Food Exchanges in meal planning.

Platform:  physical meeting.

        On 6th september2021, Resource speaker P. Manasa Lakshmi, consultant clinical dietitian, GMSR Hospital. she addressed 3rd year students on the topic food exchanges in meal planning, Its importance and how to use it while planning diet plans. She shared the standard weights and the nutrient contents of each food groups starting from cereals to poultry and meat products and beverages. She gave some examples for food exchanges using the standard tables. She explained how to use this method by working on a menu plan herself and then made the students work on their menu plan using food exchanges. she used many visual aids for better explanation. she clarified all the doubts of the students.  3rd year PG students has exhibited an exhibition on the Theme “FEED SMART RIGHT FROM THE START “.

They prepared recipes which are good for pregnant women, lactating mothers and food for weaning babies and shared the recipes they prepared and explained the importance of the foods to be taken during these periods.

GUEST LESCTURE BY MANASA LAKSHMI ACTIVITY -2 (NUTRITION WEEK)

 GUEST LECTURE – “ABCD” IN NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT

The objectives of the guest lecture were: -

·       To acknowledge about the “ABCD” technique in nutritional assessment.

·       To obtain knowledge about nutritional screening vs nutritional assessment.

Both 3rd year (UG) and PG students.

TOPIC: “ABCD” IN NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT.

Platform: Physical meeting.

On 6th September 2021, Resource speaker P. Manasa Lakshmi consultant clinical Dietician GMSR Hospital addressed the students on the topic “ABCD” in nutritional assessment. Jhansi of PG has introduced the resource speaker P. Manasa Lakshmi. she delivered her lecture on the importance of “ABCD” Technique, its usage, what comes under each alphabet.  "A " refers to anthropometric measurements, "B" refers to biochemical parameter’s "C" refers to clinical aspect’s "D" refers to dietary assessment and the which tests and aspects comes under each alphabet and she gave clear explanation of the technique, and how this method will help us to get a clear knowledge about the case for case study.  She said difference between Nutritional screening and Nutritional assessment, she gave some examples of nutritional screening and nutritional assessment tests. How they are used for assessing a person's health. she shared many of her clinical experiences and knowledge.  At the end of session, she clarified the doubts regarding the explained topic.

Webinar on “The future of nutrition practice “

·               To acknowledge about the future of nutrition in our lives.

·               To obtain knowledge about nutrition after graduation.

·               Any disease is reversible by practicing good diet and nutrition.

Platform: Virtual media (Google Meet)

On 3rd  September 2021, Mr. Dr Suresh Kumar, founder and chief coach, Dr Gene clinix addressed the students of 2nd and 3rd year Home Science on the future of nutrition practice on virtual media. U.Sri Meghana of 3rd year Home Science introduced the guest speaker . Dr Suresh Kumar. He delivered his lecture on nutrition importance in daily life and any disease is reversible. By using the simple word “TIME” the speaker explained the whole webinar. the speaker shared many of his career and life experiences and knowledge. He conducted a poll of 5 questions at the start of the webinar for knowing about the students. The forum was open for discussion at the end of the webinar, where students have clarified their doubts.
