VEGAN DAY CELEBRATION-1/11/21

 

WORLD VEGAN DAY 🌿

Date: 1/11/21

Objective:

  • To develop recipes without the incorporation of milk
  • Awareness about lactose intolerance and it’s substitute

                 Veganism is defined as a way of living that attempts to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty, whether for food, clothing or any other purpose.For these reasons, the vegan diet is devoid of all animal products, including meat, eggs and dairy. Vegans get all the nutrients that they need to be healthy, such as plant protein, fiber, and minerals Vegan diets tend to be rich in nutrients and low in saturated fats. Research suggests that the diet can improve heart health, protect against cancer, and lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. On behalf of Worlds vegan day gnanapuram st  joseph post graduation home science students celebrated it very delightfully in their college. They prepared various recipes of vegan and displayed them. All those recipes are the replacement of animals sources like milk and milk products. This are very much helpful to the people who are facing lactose intolerance. Recipes include vegan milks like coconut milk, almond milk, soya milk, ground nut milk which are purely replacing animal milk and recipes also include vegan tea and coffee made of almond milk and vegan curd made of coconut milk, vegan cowpea masala tikkis, vegan kulfi, vegan payasam made of coconut milk, vegan cake made of almond milk, vegan green smoothie made of kiwi, banana, green apple and spinach, vegan soy chapathis. This recipes are done by PG home science students of st joseph college named Janaki, Jyothi, ludhiya, mehar, mounika, swetha, yamini, harshini, devamani by the guidence of respected Gayathri mam and Sony mam.

More than 100 of students actively participated the vegan day celebrations. Head of the department of Home Science Dr Y. Lakshmi Prabha gave suggestions, Dr Jayalakshmi head of department of languages appreciated the effort and many more faculties acknowledged the hard work of the students and gave appreciation.

WORKSHOP ON FOOD EXCHANGES IN MEAL PLANNING-3 ON NUTRITIONAL WEEK-7th September 2021

WORKSHOP – FOOD EXCHANGES IN MEAL PLANNING

Date: 7th September 2021

 

The objectives of the workshop were: -

·       To learn about food exchanges in meal planning.

·       To learn to make menu plans using food exchanges.

Number of participants:  48

 

3rd year students of home science.

Topic:  Food Exchanges in meal planning.

Platform:  physical meeting.

        On 6th september2021, Resource speaker P. Manasa Lakshmi, consultant clinical dietitian, GMSR Hospital. she addressed 3rd year students on the topic food exchanges in meal planning, Its importance and how to use it while planning diet plans. She shared the standard weights and the nutrient contents of each food groups starting from cereals to poultry and meat products and beverages. She gave some examples for food exchanges using the standard tables. She explained how to use this method by working on a menu plan herself and then made the students work on their menu plan using food exchanges. she used many visual aids for better explanation. she clarified all the doubts of the students.  3rd year PG students has exhibited an exhibition on the Theme “FEED SMART RIGHT FROM THE START “.

They prepared recipes which are good for pregnant women, lactating mothers and food for weaning babies and shared the recipes they prepared and explained the importance of the foods to be taken during these periods.

 GUEST LECTURE – “ABCD” IN NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT

The objectives of the guest lecture were: -

·       To acknowledge about the “ABCD” technique in nutritional assessment.

·       To obtain knowledge about nutritional screening vs nutritional assessment.

Both 3rd year (UG) and PG students.

TOPIC: “ABCD” IN NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT.

Platform: Physical meeting.

On 6th September 2021, Resource speaker P. Manasa Lakshmi consultant clinical Dietician GMSR Hospital addressed the students on the topic “ABCD” in nutritional assessment. Jhansi of PG has introduced the resource speaker P. Manasa Lakshmi. she delivered her lecture on the importance of “ABCD” Technique, its usage, what comes under each alphabet.  "A " refers to anthropometric measurements, "B" refers to biochemical parameter’s "C" refers to clinical aspect’s "D" refers to dietary assessment and the which tests and aspects comes under each alphabet and she gave clear explanation of the technique, and how this method will help us to get a clear knowledge about the case for case study.  She said difference between Nutritional screening and Nutritional assessment, she gave some examples of nutritional screening and nutritional assessment tests. How they are used for assessing a person's health. she shared many of her clinical experiences and knowledge.  At the end of session, she clarified the doubts regarding the explained topic.

Webinar on “The future of nutrition practice “

·               To obtain knowledge about nutrition after graduation.

·               Any disease is reversible by practicing good diet and nutrition.

Topic: THE FUTURE OF NUTRITION SCIENCE

On 3rd  September 2021, Mr. Dr Suresh Kumar, founder and chief coach, Dr Gene clinix addressed the students of 2nd and 3rd year Home Science on the future of nutrition practice on virtual media. U.Sri Meghana of 3rd year Home Science introduced the guest speaker . Dr Suresh Kumar. He delivered his lecture on nutrition importance in daily life and any disease is reversible. By using the simple word “TIME” the speaker explained the whole webinar. the speaker shared many of his career and life experiences and knowledge. He conducted a poll of 5 questions at the start of the webinar for knowing about the students. The forum was open for discussion at the end of the webinar, where students have clarified their doubts.

Breastfeeding week awareness- August 1st-7th, 2021

On the occasion of world breastfeeding weak department of Home Science conducted a webinar .

 TOPIC- Colostrum – Golden liquid

 SPEAKER- Mrs. Krishna Prasunna

 AUDIENCE- Faculty, under graduate and Post gradute students.

The programme was conducted via virtual medium. It was started by a warm welcome to the speaker by Dr. Y. Lakshmi Prabha, HOD Home Sc. Speaker was introduced to the attendees by Ms. Janki, 1st yr PG student.

 Mrs. Krishna Prasunna who is a consultant dietitian, a trained ayurvedic nutritionist and a lifetime member of prestigious associations like IDA and IAPEN, working in Benguluru enlightened the students about importance and constituent of breast feeding and colostrum. The talk was presented via power point. The speaker also spoke about breast feeding during COVID times and precautions to be taken. Role of family especially father in supporting the feeding mother. Speaker also discussed about weaning.

 The lecture was well appreciated by student and faculty members.

At the end of the talk a formal vote of thanks was proposed by Meherunissa M.sc 1st year.

On 11 June 2021, Mrs. Dr. P. Mary Anupama, lecture in charge of Department of Biochemistry, St Joseph’s college for women, addressed the students of 2nd & 3rd year Home Science on Electron Transport Chain on virtual media. Krishna Madhuri the vice president of home science association introduced the guest speaker. Dr. Anupama delivered her lecture by covering basic and important chain and its applications through her well-designed power point presentations and video and explained with ease to the students. The forum was open for discussion for 10 mins, mam has cleared all the doubts of students. She shared her career experiences and knowledge and motivated students with her wonderful speech.

ANNUAL REPORT (2020-2021)

Even when it's raining the sunshine is still there which results in beautiful rainbow. Besides the huge pandemic, like every year home science association has coordinated its own innovative, unique and many outstanding activities. This year the association office barriers were SRAVANI SREEJA- THE PRESIDENT, KRISHNA MADHURI- THE VICE PRESIDENT, RATNA SREEJA- THE TREASURER, ANUSHA- SECRETARY, PRANAYA - JOINT SECRETARY and class representatives and staff advisors are Mrs GAYATRI MA'AM and Mrs SOUMYA MA'AM and the head of the department DR Y LAKSHMI PRABHA MA'AM.

This year was started with lot of zeal and enthusiasm. Students from the department of home science got unique opportunity to participate in HOME SCIENCE ENTREPRENEURIAL PROGRAM (HoScEAP). It had given the students first-hand opportunity to experience and explore the entrepreneur revenues in each discipline. It was a great honour for the department of home science to experience the presence of sr. FRANCISCA superior of waltair community along with the principal Dr.sr.SHYJI, vice principal sr. HEMA and faculty members of other departments and respective staff members who graced the occasion.


The students were geared up and looked forward for various activities that showcase their talents. since home science association has created a platform and given an opportunity to each and every one to express their talents with a new feel.

Even in this pandemic nothing has stopped us from conducting activities to enhance the hidden talents and creating fun. Activities have been conducted through various platforms using social media.

The first and interesting activity conducted was “MAKE IT SNAPPY” on the theme 'food photography' in the month of December. Instagram had been the platform to conduct the first and foremost activity by the association. All the home science students had been actively taken part in this activity.



The next activity conducted was Nutrieducation in a digital way on an occasion of “NATIONAL DIETETICS DAY”. Nutrition as being a part of our home science it plays a major role in our daily life and makeup nutritionally a healthy person. This video had been uploaded on Facebook page of St Joseph's College and well appreciated by senior faculty of other departments.



The third activity conducted was “EYE MAKEUP COMPETITION” in which all the three years had been taken part and presented their excellent talent in makeup with beautiful arts.



The fourth activity was conducted on an occasion of protein day students had been given a chance to explore and prepare a nutritious “PROTEIN BITES”.



The 5th and 6th activities conducted were “WHAT'S IN THE BOX” and “MEMORY GAME” which were fun and brain engaging activities. Students had shown an active participation with enthusiasm. The activities conducted were Live by maintaining covid protocol.



The seventh activity was “GUESS THE LANGUAGE” was conducted virtually on zoom meet in buzz. Various National in international languages were included through which the students can enhance the general knowledge. There was an active participation by all the students of Home science.



On an occasion of “WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY” the following activities have been conducted in which the students show so active and enthusiastic participation.

The eight activity conducted was “RIDDLE HUNT” through WhatsApp mode. The medals were given in a locket PDF and the participants need to find the final answer.



The ninth activity eyes breaker (i.e., PICTIONARY) was conducted virtual you a google meet. “EYES BREAKER” is a kind of tricky activity conducted via Google made in which each participant can view the screen presented. This activity includes pictures with encoded word related to environment in the task is that participants need to decode in text the answer in incall messages. We have a good number of participants and all the participants had fun during the activity.



The tenth activity was “PUBLIC SPEAKING”. It is the act of speaking face to face to a live audience. It boosts the student’s confidence in improve communication skills. The topic of this activity was ‘STRATEGIES TO SLOW DOWN ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION’ and the participants gave their views and ways to control the pollution and reduce the unwanted usage of energies. This activity guest and judges were Dr.P. MARY ANUPAMA ma'am lecturer in charge department of biochemistry in Dr.Y. LAKSHMI PRABHA ma'am head of the department of home science.



The eleventh activity was “TINY TERRACE”. It is like a kitchen garden. This activity is conducted via Gmail. The students had sent their entries of their kitchen garden or tiny terrace and which the students planted in recent times. They expressed their views how excited were they while planting, how enthusiastic they felt while taking care of the plant.



The twelfth activity was “RECYCLE ME”. This activity was conducted via Gmail in which each participant will send the entries of their materials which they prepared out of waste. These materials show the creativeness in reusing the waste at home. This makes the person feel interesting and makeup ideas to prepare a simple or waste product to attractive one.



Apart from this on an account of “WORLD HUNGER DAY” students of home science participated in poster making competition, which is conducted by SANT HIRDARAM GIRLS COLLEGE, BHOPAL in collaboration with NUTRITION SOCIETY OF INDIA, BHOPAL CHAPTER and every participant won the participation certificate.
