Medical Camp -National Nutrition week

The department of Home Science on collaboration with Rainbow Hospitals , conducted a free medical camp for the students and staff members of St. Joseph’s college for women (A).

The medical camp consisted of various checkups like:

Ø  Anthropometric measurements

Ø  BMI analysis

Ø  HB test

Ø  Gynecologist consultation

Ø  Dietician consultant

Ø   Total 5 members were present in the medical camp from the hospital. The doctors present were:

Total no. of 200-250 registrations were done on the day. 120 for HB test; 40 gynaec consultations; 40 dietitian consultations were registered.

CONCLUSION:

                  All the staff and the students have actively participated in the medical camp and made it a success.

Field Visit / Study Tour Report: This trip gave us the opportunity to learn and observe various skills such as weaving process, toy manufacturing process, block printing and the preparation of jaggery based products.

We the students of III HOME SCIENCE went to an outdoor visit to Dominos near beach road, Novotel, Visakhapatnam. The purpose of visit is to have a clear understanding about the food quality control and safety measures followed by the Dominos staff in their kitchen .Students observed each and everything like cold storage .In cold storage students noticed some guidelines displayed in the storage room like temperature chart, dough proofing guide, shelf life chart, shelf life record, list of Imminent Health Risks. Students also observed that the foods imported by the Dominos are FSSAI hallmarked I.e.; they are following the standards of food laws. They are getting all the imported food items from their main branch, Hyderabad.

                         Then all students are engaged in pizza making with the help of the demo given by the staff in the kitchen. Students made the pizza of their own and tasted their own delicious pizza.

CONCLUSION   : 

                        Students had a great exposure on visiting Dominos and had an experience of pizza making. Students came to know about the storage process and safety measures and practices maintained by the Dominos kitchen.

WORKSHOP ON BLOUSE MAKING

The department of Home Science has conducted a two days workshop on “Blouse Making” by Ms. T.Tanuja Sravanthi, Alumna, and subject expert. Students of II B.Sc. Home Science participated in the workshop.

During the workshop students of II B.Sc. Home Science have acquired skill in blouse making using cotton and poplin fabrics. Different methods of drafting techniques were learnt like flat pattern techniques using their old blouse measurements and also learnt techniques in taking measurements for stitching a blouse. The basic standards in drafting and principles in cutting and stitching were learnt.  Techniques in cutting bias pieces for neckline finishes and general finishing process like hemming were taught. Adjustment of fabric while cutting and economically usage of fabric while drafting were the key points also be considered and were well trained. Assembling of cutting patterns stepwise and its importance at every point were discussed. The role of darts and seams in getting shape of blouse is also discussed. General information like selection of fabric while stitching blouse for various age groups were also discussed.

On the second day the students individually practiced blouse stitching and were supervised and guided by the resource person. Students learnt skill in stitching and fixing the fasteners. Different types of sleeves and necklines were also taught like basic sleeves, long sleeves and puff sleeves. Necklines like round neck, square and boat necklines were also taught. Evaluations of student were done based upon the stitching abilities and the end product produced. This blouse making helps in provides employment and generates income. This training program provides young women with vocational skills required to establish their own business. They can also acquire jobs in boutiques and can be trainers.

            The department of Home Science has conducted a one day workshop on “Bag Making” by Ms. T.Tanuja Sravanthi, Alumna, and subject expert. Students of III B.Sc. Home Science participated in the workshop and presented various types of bag.

            During the workshop students of III B.Sc. Home Science have done various types of bags – using canvas and jute fabrics. Instructions were given on general rules to be followed during the pattern making. Standard measurement of different models of bags such as tote bags, sling bags, cell phone pouches were taught. The bags are eco- friendly and are enriched with kalamkari and batik printed fabrics. Students learnt skill in stitching and fixing the fasteners. During the workshop various techniques in bag making were discussed. These bags are esthetic and are replaced with plastic bags. This bag making helps in provides employment and generates income. This training program provides young women with vocational skills required to establish their own business. These not only support economically and also show environmental responsibility by using eco friendly fabrics.

REPORT OF GUEST LECTURE ON BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEMS

 

On 17th October 2023, a guest lecture was conducted for the students of II B.sc Home science on the topic Behavioral problems.  The guest speaker was Ms. Gladys Evangeline ma’am who is currently working as a school counselor at Kendriya vidyalaya Vizianagaram. During the session, the factors that may result in the behavioural problems such as parental factors, family factors, socio-economic factors are discussed. The major behavioural problems during the childhood years are thumbsucking,enuresis temoer tantrums,disruptive behavior juvenile delinquency and their causative factors such as the lack of communication, single parenting,parental rejection of the child,and many such reasons, early identification and treatment methods are also discussed.

After the session, a doubt solving time was given, where ma’am has clarified our doubts.

We thank our Head of the Department and the faculty for providing us the opportunity.
