REPORT
On 7th October 2024, the Department of Home Science at St. Joseph's College for Women (Autonomous), Visakhapatnam, organized an educational activity to commemorate World Habitat Day. This event aimed to raise awareness about sustainable living spaces and the significance of planned housing layouts for efficient and comfortable living.
As part of the initiative, B.Sc. Home Science III Year students actively participated in designing and preparing 3D models of various house layouts, including 1BHK, 2BHK, dining rooms, kitchens, and living rooms, as part of their curriculum paper Interior Design and Decoration. These models served as a visual representation of functional and ergonomic home designs, emphasizing space utilization, ventilation, and eco-friendly architectural concepts.
The students meticulously crafted the models using environmentally sustainable materials, such as recycled cardboard, biodegradable adhesives, and natural fiber-based components. This approach ensured that sustainability remained a core theme of the project. The event included an exhibition where the models were displayed, allowing faculty members and fellow students to engage with the concepts presented. Each model was accompanied by a brief explanation detailing its design, utility, and environmental considerations.
The event successfully enhanced students’ understanding of housing layouts, interior planning, and sustainable home design, aligning with the theme of World Habitat Day, which emphasizes "Resilient urban economies: Cities as drivers of growth and recovery." The models showcased innovative and practical solutions for modern-day housing needs while promoting environmentally conscious choices.
The event concluded with an interactive session, where students discussed their projects with faculty members and peers, sharing insights into how thoughtful home design can enhance daily living. Feedback from participants and attendees highlighted the educational value of the activity, encouraging future projects focusing on sustainable development and housing solutions.
Overall, the World Habitat Day 2024 activity was a resounding success, fostering creativity, awareness, and practical knowledge among students. The department looks forward to expanding such initiatives in the future, incorporating more diverse housing concepts and interdisciplinary collaborations to further enrich the learning experience.
