 Recipe Competition on Galactagogues by Home Science Students

As part of World Breastfeeding Awareness Week, a Recipe Competition focused on galactagogues was held on August 2nd, 2024. The event saw enthusiastic participation from both 2nd and 3rd-year Home Science students, who prepared a variety of recipes designed to support lactating mothers.

The competition aimed to highlight the importance of galactagogues—foods and herbs that promote milk production—in the diets of breastfeeding mothers. Students showcased their culinary skills by creating nutritious and innovative recipes, which they displayed and explained in detail.

Rosina George from the Department of Zoology served as the judge for the event, offering her expertise and thoughtful feedback. The competition was a great success, with a large number of participants contributing to the diverse and delicious array of dishes presented.

The event not only promoted awareness of the significance of galactagogues but also provided students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a practical and creative way.

On July 31st, 2024, a half-day workshop on "Fashion Draping Techniques" was conducted for final-year Home Science students by our esteemed alumna, Bhagya Sri, who recently completed her Master's in Textiles from Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore.

The workshop focused on various draping patterns and stitching techniques, particularly using handloom fabrics. Bhagya Sri shared her expertise in the field, demonstrating the versatility and beauty of handloom textiles through creative draping methods. The session was both practical and inspirational, offering students valuable insights into the art of fashion draping.

The workshop was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn from an accomplished alumna, enhancing their skills and appreciation for traditional textiles.

 Workshop on "Effective Lactation Techniques" by Dr. Nalini Sadaram

As part of World Breastfeeding Awareness Week, a workshop on "Effective Lactation Techniques" was held on August 2nd, 2024, for II and III year Home Science students. The session was conducted by Dr. Nalini Sadaram, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) from Rainbow Hospital.

Dr. Sadaram demonstrated various lactation techniques using live models, supported by an informative PowerPoint presentation and video demonstrations. The workshop provided students with practical insights into effective breastfeeding practices, covering essential techniques to support both mothers and infants.

The feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. Students expressed their appreciation for the hands-on approach and the opportunity to learn from an expert in the field. The workshop left a lasting impact, enhancing the students' understanding and confidence in applying lactation techniques in real-world scenarios.

On August 2nd, 2024, as part of World Breastfeeding Awareness Week, the III year Home Science students organized an E-Poster Presentation focused on the topic of "Breastbanks." The event saw enthusiastic participation from a large number of students, showcasing their creativity and knowledge on this vital subject.

The presentations highlighted the importance of breast milk banks, their role in supporting infants who cannot be breastfed by their mothers, and the scientific and ethical considerations surrounding the establishment and operation of these banks.

We were honored to have Mousami from the Department of Biochemistry as the judge for the presentations. Her expertise and insights provided valuable feedback to the students, making the event not only educational but also highly engaging.

The event was a great success, contributing to the ongoing efforts to raise awareness about breastfeeding and the significance of breast milk banks.

 Field Visit to Victoria Hospital-World Breastfeeding Awareness Week-1/8/24

On August 1st, 2024, as part of their Learning and Skill Development (LSD) program, 2nd degree Home Science students, accompanied by their faculty members, visited Victoria Hospital to observe World Breastfeeding Awareness Week. The field visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to explore the practical implications of breastfeeding and maternal care.

During the visit, the students toured various wards, including the antenatal care ward, pregnancy ward, neonatal ward, operating theatre (OT), and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This hands-on experience allowed them to gain insights into the healthcare practices associated with breastfeeding and maternal care.

To gather comprehensive data, students conducted personal interviews and distributed questionnaires to healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers. This firsthand data collection was instrumental in enriching their understanding of the complexities involved in antenatal and neonatal care.

The visit was an eye-opening experience for the students, reinforcing the importance of breastfeeding and the critical role healthcare facilities play in supporting mothers and newborns.
